The video for the latest Arctic Monkeys single ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High’ is, to say the least, very literal. The trippy clip features front man Alex Turner high, as he goes through a series of hallucinations, all the while desperately trying to contact a girl called Stephanie, obviously on the prowl for a booty call.
It starts out with the band having some shots in a bar, with ‘Do I Wanna Know’ playing in the background. As Turner starts tripping and the wall clock melts, he leaves the bar and stumbles into the street. Visions of Stephanie fornicating in public plague his mind – such as having sex in a store window, giving a cab driver a BJ and having sex in the street – before being abused by a man who’s face warps into deformity.
The story ends with Stephanie seeing that her phone has 17 unread messages from “Alex Band Guy” and Tuner turning up at what he thinks is Stephanie’s doorstep, which in actuality is across the street. Needless to say, the girl ignores his messages and one of the sexiest men in music is left out in the cold. All in a night’s work, right?
On their inspiration for the song Turner told Rolling Stone, “We took a Dr. Dre beat from like 2001, gave it like an Ike Turner Beatles bowl cut and then set it off galloping along on a Stratocaster into a liquid live show.”
The song is the second release from the Arctic Monkeys’ forthcoming album AM, which is due for release on September 10.
