Talented MC Ellesquire released a new album last Monday which he describes as ‘part experiment, part scrapbook and part mixtape’ on his website.
This is the second release for the Sydney-sider who, along with the likes of Tuka and Daily Meds is signed to Big Village Records. Tracks from his debut album Ready received high praise in 2011 and were on high rotation on Triple J.
The Messtape is available as a free download and features 13 tracks of fun, bouncy Aussie Hip Hop which is true to the genre without being cliché.
General themes run along the lines of getting drunk and ex-girlfriends, but there are some really clever verses.
He’s used some really cool samples as well – track 7 ‘Where’s LS?’ is a clever take on Drapht and M-Phazes’s ‘Where’s Elvis? and just as good, if not better. But my personal favourite is the ‘I love scotch’ Anchorman sample and Kendrick Lamar reference in ‘Last Drunk’.
The entire thing is catchy, humorous, and I can’t stop listening to it!
But just in case you need another reason to listen to The Messtape here is a bit of Ellesquire circa 2011 to remind you of the epic-ness.
